If you have a kid away at school, or you were one once, here's a stat that might explain a smell: almost 1 in 4 college students will go an entire semester without washing their sheets. Not their clothes. Their bed.
We went looking for the numbers on this because we make laundry detergent sheets, and it turns out the actual bed sheets in this story are just as neglected.
The stats are rough
A 2023 survey from the American Cleaning Institute found that parents are not exactly optimistic about their college kids' laundry habits, and for good reason:
- Almost 1 in 4 (24%) of parents suspect their student will go a full semester without changing their sheets
- Nearly half (49%) predict their kid will bring laundry home over break expecting someone else to do it
- More than a third (36%) think their kid will just wear the dirty clothes because doing laundry didn't happen
So it's not one rogue freshman. It's a pattern.

How often should you actually wash your sheets
According to Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Dr. Sean McGregor, sheets should get washed at least once a week, every two weeks at the absolute latest. A semester is roughly 15 weeks. Do the math on that gap.
The reason it matters isn't complicated: sheets collect sweat, dead skin, and whatever your dorm mattress has seen, and none of that improves with age.
Laundry isn't the problem, hauling stuff is
College students aren't lazy about laundry. Caldwell & Gregory, which supplies laundry machines to campuses, found students do about 3 to 4 loads a week and spend $9 to $12 a week doing it. That's not nothing, in time or money.
The real friction is logistics. No car, no space for a giant jug of detergent, a shared laundry room three floors down, and a bottle that's more likely to tip over in a backpack than make it there in one piece.
The easy fix
